I bought a wristwatch on 5th Avenue yesterday to celebrate a personal milestone and it took overnight to occur to me that Vladimir Putin must have worn the same brand at some point, likely as it is made in East Germany near Dresden, where Putin was stationed as a KBG agent in 1989, while I was working in the Reagan Administration.

You will recall my late wife was a Russian Jewish emigre. Her father brought back a couple of "trophy" pieces of finely-made German contraband in the aftermath of WWII.
Germans made the best of Communism (which is not to say that it turned out well-speaking only in comparative terms vis-a-vis the rest of the cesspool) through their relative discipline, education, and technical knowledge. Along with the watches, German cameras like Leica and German optics generally were prized.
